Trading markets explained (what you’ll find here)
“Markets” can mean different things in trading. On ForexForStarters, this section focuses on the instruments most beginners run into:
forex currency pairs (majors and exotics) and metals (like gold).
- Majors: the most liquid pairs (often tighter spreads).
- Exotics: less liquid pairs that can be more expensive to trade.
- Metals: popular CFDs/spot symbols like XAU/USD, often more volatile than majors.
Beginner tip: start with one major pair (or one metal) and learn its rhythm.
How to pick a market as a beginner
For most beginners, it is easiest to start with one liquid market (usually a major forex pair). Liquid markets tend to have tighter spreads and cleaner price movement.
A simple beginner approach:
- Pick one instrument (example: EUR/USD).
- Practice orders (stop loss and take profit).
- Keep position size small and consistent.
- Avoid trading during extreme news spikes until you have experience.
Why market choice matters
- Costs: spreads and slippage can be very different per market and session.
- Volatility: some markets move calmly, others spike and whipsaw.
- Strategy fit: trend-following and mean-reversion don’t work equally well everywhere.
A good first “strategy” is choosing the right market + controlling risk.
